The terminal reaffirmed its position as a key player in port logistics in northern Chile and South America, demonstrating its capacity for innovation, productive growth and community engagement.

Antofagasta, January 27, 2025

Antofagasta Terminal Internacional (ATI) closed 2024 with important operational milestones, progress in sustainability and a strong commitment to regional and employee development.

General Manager Mark Bindhoff commented, “Our strategy is focused on business excellence and continuous improvement to deliver a high standard of service to our customers. This drives us to focus on safety and efficient, sustainable operations.

A significant milestone for ATI in 2024 was its 24% growth in general and breakbulk cargo, reaching throughput of nearly 3 million tons. This achievement makes the terminal a highly attractive alternative for customers handling cargo for projects in the region or neighboring countries. For example, the terminal unloaded the first green hydrogen locomotive in South America for FCAB, an important step in the region’s energy transition.

In addition, the new WS4 container service was launched, operated by the shipping line Hapag Lloyd, a feeder that strengthens cargo connections with the region’s main port hubs. This new service reinforces the growth trend in this logistic model, which ATI has effectively promoted. In human talent development, more than 4,700 training sessions were held to educate the terminal’s 500+ employees.

During the year, important improvements in employee safety and prevention were also made, significantly reducing the impact on critical operational risks. For one such project, unprecedented in the industry, the terminal put in safety fencing at the edge of the berth to protect personnel from mooring lines coming loose from bollards. Along the same lines, it installed solar-powered lights in different operating areas, a clean, renewable energy source that also contributes to the sustainable development of the port community.

Growing Productivity

ATI achieved important advances in container transfer productivity, with a 10% increase in gross yield thanks to its new operating model. This included purchasing 13 terminal tractors, eliminating exposure to suspended cargo, creating new specialties and improving operating performance.
Bulk shipments of zinc and copper concentrates were up 14%, consolidating the positive performance from 2023.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Community

ATI continued fortifying its role as a regional change agent, developing and participating in more than 40 social, educational, environmental and sports initiatives. Some examples include the “Impulso Comunitario ATI” competitive grants for social organizations; the “Crece con tu Puerto” program for training and certification in areas demanded by the industry, providing 30 scholarships to the Antonio Rendic B-32 High School; collaboration agreements with regional sports clubs and athletes; and environmental education projects with Fundación Humboldti and Desierto Azul, impacting more than a thousand people.

In addition, to boost community engagement and a sense of belonging to the port, the terminal gave more than 1,500 guided tours, welcoming preschoolers, schoolchildren, university students, neighborhood councils and employees’ families. These visits spotlighted the port’s historical and economic importance for the city and the region.

With solid operations, greater efficiency and a continued focus on sustainability, ATI is preparing to face the port sector’s challenges and strengthen its contribution to regional and national development.
