The activity was a commitment made by the SAAM Terminals Cup to donate a tree for each goal scored in the tournament.

The 14th SAAM Terminals Cup concluded with a promise: to plant one tree for each goal scored in the tournament, which brings together teams from the company’s terminals and the industry. In all, 400 goals were made, so a group of company volunteers met at the Quebrada de Córdova Nature Sanctuary in the municipality of El Tabo on July 10 to plant the pledged trees.

SAAM Terminals’s VP Corporate Sustainability and Communications, Cristina Schmidt, commented that “this initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Each goal scored in our soccer tournament was not only a triumph on the field, but also a tangible contribution to reforestation and conserving our natural environment. Personally planting them at the nature sanctuary also gives them special meaning.

The species peumo, maqui and quillay were selected for the project and the saplings planted were grown by elderly women in rural areas of Chile. The activity was supported by two foundations: Fundación Núcleo Nativo and Fundación Kennedy.

The director of Fundación Núcleo Nativo, Álvaro Sandoval, expressed his appreciation for the joint work, emphasizing that these opportunities “bring people closer to nature and the role of restoration in an area that is well cared for and has a good purpose, like the Quebrada de Córdova.” He added that the three species selected are “exotic flora that can adapt to this place and help replace the numerous eucalyptus trees with native trees. Understanding what it takes for nature to restore itself, volunteers are key in the planting process and because of what they take away from the experience.

SAAM Terminals volunteers evaluated the activity positively. “It was very enriching and a good initiative. They helped us build awareness for the environment and for the native flora and fauna through a recreational activity that took us beyond the workplace,” said SAAM Logistics Quality Analyst Juanita Díaz.
