STI in 2024: State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Concession Extension
San Antonio, January 2025
San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) concluded a successful 2024, achieving significant milestones such as surpassing one million TEUs for the thirteenth consecutive year, securing the extension of its concession until 2030, and becoming the first port in Chile to obtain the Seal of Excellence in the Huella Chile program. This was made possible by implementing a robust investment plan that ensures the terminal’s capacity for the coming years.
“In recent years, we have projected the port into the future. This year, we achieved two key milestones: investments of over 66 million dollars, which allowed us to handle up to 1.6 million TEUs annually, and the extension of our concession until 2030. All of this under our fundamental pillars: efficiency, safety, and quality,” said Andrés Albertini, General Manager of STI.
Growth and Operational Achievements
2024 STI handled more than 1.1 million TEUs, with a notable 30% increase in cherry exports and the transfer of 15,300 refrigerated containers destined for Asia. This consolidated the terminal as the country’s main cherry export port, supported by a 15-million-dollar investment that enabled the installation of 27 new reefer towers and 2,400 connections for refrigerated containers.
Additionally, the port advanced in the studies and simulations required by authorities to seek the necessary approvals to operate with a wave height of up to 2.5 meters, strengthening the competitiveness and safety of the San Antonio bay, vital for various national industries.
Key Milestones
In April, the vessel APL Esplanade, with a length of 369 meters and a width of 51 meters, became the largest to arrive in Chile, setting a record in national port operations. Chilean President Gabriel Boric’s visits also stood out, highlighting the importance of port infrastructure for the country’s development.
Commitment to Sustainability
Regarding sustainability, STI became the first port terminal in Chile to receive the Seal of Excellence from Huella Chile, recognizing its efforts in measuring and reducing its carbon footprint. Additionally, it obtained the I-REC certification, guaranteeing that 100% of its energy comes from renewable sources.
Innovations in Security and Safety
The company incorporated artificial intelligence into its video surveillance system, allowing it to identify critical areas and improve safety and security. It also internally developed telemetry systems and technologies to prevent accidents in RTG cranes and implemented improvements in STS crane cabins to protect operators.
Community Impact and Labor Relations
In August, STI launched a competitive fund for community organizations, financing seven projects for execution. It also supported the San Antonio Cultural Center, benefiting more than 1,700 children and young people with workshops and cultural activities.
In the labor field, the company successfully concluded collective bargaining processes with three unions, highlighting the solid labor relationship and the company’s collaborative approach.
